Best Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a common condition that affects up to 10% of Americans. It can be embarrassing and painful when left untreated for too long. However, there are a number of home remedies that work as some of the best toenail fungus treatments out there. Here’s a quick list of some of the most effective home remedies out there.

  1. Topical nail solutions

By far the best toenail fungus treatment out there, topical nail solutions come in a small, easy-to-carry bottle that includes a brush applicator for easy application. It’s safe, affordable, and works quickly. It’s the easiest item to use on the list. Start by cutting and filing the nail as close to the infection as possible. Wash the affected area thoroughly with warm water to loosen the skin around the nails. Dry completely before applying the treatment onto the affected nail. Usually, topical nail solutions need to only be applied twice daily.

      2. Baking soda

Baking soda is a common household item, vinegar can soak up the moisture on your feet, and effectively treats the damaged or affected nail. However, the affected toenail may also loosen and fall off, making room for a  healthy nail to grow. To use baking soda, make a paste out of the product with warm water, and spread it on the affected nails. Alternatively, you can also use it for a soak. Add baking soda to a bucket or tub of water, and soak your feet for 20 to 30 minutes. Make sure to thoroughly rinse your feet after, and dry them completely.

       3. Vinegar

Another common household item, vinegar, like baking soda, is one of the best toenail fungus treatment out there. Vinegar is diluted from acetic acid, which is harmless and has antifungal properties that effectively kill the fungus, making it effective for both toenail fungus and athlete’s foot. Its antifungal activity is more powerful than that of other food preservatives. When making a foot soak, make sure to dilute the product first. Ration the soak to 1-part vinegar and 2-parts water. The soak may smell strong, but the odor will dissipate after the vinegar dries from your feet.

       4. Tea tree oil

This essential oil is one of the best toenail fungus treatment for its significant antifungal effects, as well as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Tea tree oil is safe to use if properly diluted. This reduces the chance of a reaction.  Add tea tree oil to a carrier oil such as coconut oil. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture, and place on the affected nail for a few minutes. You can also do a foot soak a few times a week. To do this, add five drops of tea tree oil to half an ounce of carrier oil, and stir them into a bucket or tub of warm water. Soak your feet for 20 to 30 minutes.

        5. Snakeroot extract

While not well known in the United States, it’s a traditional treatment for fungal infections. Also known as Ageratina, snakeroot extract is part of the sunflower family, and is widely known for its antifungal properties. Snakeroot extract can be bought online or in specialty stores. Simply apply to the affected nail two to three times a week.
